How to Get a Medical Cannabis Patient Registration in Washington, D.C.

Who Can Apply?

  • DC residents can apply for a free medical cannabis patient registration. Online or at dispensary applicants receive a temporary digital card instantly (valid for 30 days). Registration takes about two minutes with a DC ID or proof of residence. 

How to Apply or Renew

  • Adults 21+: Apply online or at the MetroLeaf retail location with the Adult Medical Cannabis Patient Application. (no doctor’s recommendation needed).
    • If you are 18-20 years old you must provide a healthcare recommendation.
  • Minors (17 & under): Parents/guardians must apply

How Long is It Valid?

  • New registrations (starting March 2, 2025) are valid for 2 years.
  • Existing 6-year registrations remain valid until their listed expiration date.

Digital & Physical Cards

  • Online or at dispensary applicants receive a temporary digital card instantly (valid for 30 days). A permanent digital card is emailed if approved.
  • In-person at ABCA applicants receive a permanent digital card upon approval.

Physical Card Option ($10 Fee)

  • Select “Card Request” as the application type.
  • A payment link will be sent after processing.
  • Once paid, the card will be mailed to your provided address.

Canceling a Registration
